About

Spiral Stair Installation in Long Grove, IL

When we arrived at this property in Long Grove, IL, our task was to install a custom spiral staircase that would serve both function and aesthetics. The client had limited space but needed vertical access to a second-level balcony. A straight stair wouldn’t fit the footprint — so a spiral stair was the perfect solution. At Steel Porch Chicago, we specialize in structural metal stair systems, and spiral staircases are one of our most detail-focused services.

The process started with precision measurements of the upper landing and the available base area. Spiral stair installations require exact math — from center post height to tread rise and angle. We mapped out the diameter, tread count, and step rotation so that the final height aligned exactly with the second-floor deck in Long Grove. This project needed a 60″ diameter stair with 12 treads, a mid-landing, and a welded top platform.

Once the layout was confirmed, we fabricated each component in-house. The center post was cut from thick-wall steel tubing, with welded brackets spaced evenly for tread supports. Each tread was laser-cut from steel plate with integrated grip patterns for anti-slip safety. The balusters and handrail were pre-bent and welded to match the stair’s tight curve. Spiral stairs don’t allow room for error — every weld, angle, and hole needs to line up perfectly or it throws off the entire rotation.

Back on-site, we started by anchoring the center column into a newly poured concrete footing. This is the backbone of the spiral system — it needs to be perfectly plumb and immovable. With the post set, we began installing treads one by one, locking each into its bracket and spacing precisely. As the staircase rose, we bolted each baluster in sequence and attached the handrail, wrapping the full 360° spiral in a continuous motion. The upper platform was welded directly to the existing balcony with full perimeter seal welds.

To finish the project, we sandblasted the entire structure and applied a two-layer powder coat in textured matte black. This coating provides long-term protection from rust, UV, and wear, which is especially important for exterior spiral stairs in Long Grove, IL, where temperature and moisture can fluctuate dramatically. Once the coating cured, we performed a final inspection — checking step spacing, handrail height, anchor strength, and weld integrity. Everything passed flawlessly.
